Wheel balancing

How wheel balancing works

A wheel that is out of balance can cause vibration through the steering wheel or the seat, often at higher speeds, and uneven tyre wear. We balance the wheels at the car: each wheel is taken off, spun on the balancing machine in the van, and small weights are fixed to the rim to even it out. Balancing is done whenever we fit a new tyre, and it can be booked on its own.

It is not the same as wheel alignment, which sets the angles of the wheels. We do not do alignment, so if the car pulls to one side, a garage with an alignment rig is the place for that. Our main wheel balancing page, linked below, has more detail.

What the job includes

  • Each wheel checked for missing or loose weights
  • Wheels balanced at the car with the right equipment
  • Tyres looked over for uneven wear while the wheels are off
  • Wheel nuts tightened to the maker's setting
  • A plain answer if the problem is alignment rather than balance
On the road

Red routes, permit bays and private car parks

Every wheel comes off in turn, so the fitter needs firm, level ground with room beside the car. We cannot stop or work on a red route; the car needs to be on a side street or private ground first. A car parked on one needs to move to a side street or private ground first.

If the car is in a controlled parking zone permit bay, tell us so the fitter can park legally beside it. A retail park or an office car park is private ground, so the owner's permission comes first.

Before you call

What to tell us on the call

The price depends on how many wheels need balancing, and we confirm it on the call before anyone sets off. The price is the same at any hour.

  • The borough and the street, or the name of the car park
  • Whether the car is in a permit bay, on a red route or on private ground
  • How many wheels you want balanced
When to balance

When balancing is worth booking

Balancing is part of every new tyre we fit. On its own, it is worth booking when a vibration has appeared after a kerb strike or a pothole, when a balance weight is missing from the rim, or when winter and summer wheels are swapped over and have not been balanced for a while.

Look at the tyre first if the shake started suddenly after an impact: a bulge on the sidewall means the tyre needs replacing, and balancing will not fix it.

Tread and age

When a tyre needs replacing

Most tyres have small raised bars in the main grooves, called tread wear indicators. When the tread is worn level with them, the tyre is at the legal limit. A 20p coin is a rough check: if the outer band of the coin shows when it is pushed into the main grooves, the tread may be close to the limit.

Grip in the wet falls away well before the limit, so many drivers replace tyres at around 3 mm. Age matters too: cracking in the sidewall or between the tread blocks means the rubber is perishing, even on a tyre with plenty of tread left.

Step by step

From your call to the finished job

→

Tell us what happened

Tell us when the shaking starts and where you feel it: through the steering wheel, the seat or the floor.

→

Agree what happens next

You hear what the job involves and the options for your car. Nothing is booked until you say yes.

→

Work at the car

The fitter comes to your home, your workplace or a safe place to park, raises the car on a jack and does the job beside it.

Checked before the fitter leaves

Before the fitter leaves, the wheel is checked for security and the tyre pressure is set to the maker's figure.

Before the visit

Getting the car ready

Leave the locking wheel nut key somewhere easy to find, such as the driver's seat or the glovebox, and tell us if the car will be at work rather than at home.

You do not need to stay with the car for the whole job, but someone needs to hand over the keys and agree the work. If the car is in a residents' bay or a work car park, check the fitter can park close to it.

Questions

Questions and answers

Will I pay the ULEZ charge because the car is being worked on?
No. The ULEZ has covered every London borough since 29 August 2023, and it charges for driving a non-compliant vehicle, not for a car standing still. Balancing the wheels where it is parked does not change that.
Is balancing the same as alignment?
No. Balancing evens out the weight around the wheel; alignment sets the angles of the wheels. They solve different problems.
How do I know if my wheels need balancing?
A vibration at a certain speed, often felt through the steering wheel, is the classic sign. It tends to fade above that speed.
Can a lost wheel weight cause vibration?
Yes. Weights can be knocked off by kerbs or potholes, and the vibration usually starts soon after.
Why does the car vibrate only at certain speeds?
An unbalanced wheel sets up a vibration that is strongest in one speed band, often on the motorway, and fades either side of it.
Do new tyres need balancing?
Yes. A wheel is balanced each time a new tyre is fitted to it.
How soon can the fitter get to me?
It depends on how far the car is from our only base at Brent Cross, NW2, and on the jobs already booked.
What should I have ready when I call?
The tyre size from the sidewall, the registration and the exact location of the car. If the car has locking wheel nuts, have the key ready.
Can you work on the street outside my house?
Yes, if it is legal to park there and the car is not blocking traffic. A quiet residential street is usually fine; a busy main road or a red route is not.
How much will it cost?
The price depends on the tyre size, the tier you choose and the work needed.

Why do tyres wear unevenly?

Bald edges, a worn centre or feathered tread each tell a story. Here's how to read uneven tyre wear patterns and fix the cause before it ruins the next set.
