Wheel balancing

Wheel balancing at the car, to stop the shake and the uneven wear

A wheel that is out of balance can cause vibration through the steering wheel or the seat, often at higher speeds, and uneven tyre wear. We balance the wheels at the car: each wheel is taken off, spun on the balancing machine in the van, and small weights are fixed to the rim to even it out. Balancing is done whenever we fit a new tyre, and it can be booked on its own.

An unbalanced wheel is rarely an emergency, but the vibration wears the tyre unevenly and gets worse as the speed rises, so it is worth booking soon. If the vibration started suddenly after hitting a kerb or a pothole, look at the tyre for a bulge first: a bulge means the tyre needs replacing, not balancing.

It is not the same as wheel alignment, which sets the angles of the wheels. We do not do alignment, so if the car pulls to one side, a garage with an alignment rig is the place for that. Our main wheel balancing page, linked below, has more detail.

Where we can do this

Each wheel comes off for balancing, so the fitter needs firm, level ground and room beside the car: a driveway, a legal space on a quiet street, or a car park where the owner allows it.

  • The area is inside the London-wide Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), in force since 29 August 2023: a charge for driving a vehicle that does not meet its emission standards, not for a parked car.

The price depends on how many wheels need balancing, and we confirm it on the call before anyone sets off.

What the job includes

  • Each wheel checked for missing or loose weights
  • Wheels balanced at the car with the right equipment
  • Tyres looked over for uneven wear while the wheels are off
  • Wheel nuts tightened to the maker's setting
  • A plain answer if the problem is alignment rather than balance

Signs a wheel is out of balance

No tyre and wheel are perfectly even in weight. Balancing adds small weights to the rim so the wheel turns without wobbling. When a weight falls off, or after a new tyre or a repair, the wheel can be out of balance.

The usual signs are:

  • A shake in the steering wheel that comes and goes at certain speeds, often on faster roads
  • A vibration through the seat or floor, which usually points to a rear wheel
  • Patchy, uneven wear on the tread, sometimes called cupping
  • A clean patch on the rim where a balance weight used to be

An unbalanced wheel wears the tyre unevenly and puts extra load on wheel bearings and steering parts, so it is worth sorting even when the shake seems mild.

Work at the car

The fitter comes to your home, your workplace or a safe place to park, raises the car on a jack and does the job beside it.

Checked before the fitter leaves

Before the fitter leaves, the wheel is checked for security and the tyre pressure is set to the maker's figure.

Before the visit

Getting the car ready

Leave the locking wheel nut key somewhere easy to find, such as the driver's seat or the glovebox, and tell us if the car will be at work rather than at home.

You do not need to stay with the car for the whole job, but someone needs to hand over the keys and agree the work. If the car is in a residents' bay or a work car park, check the fitter can park close to it.

Have these ready when you call:

  • Which wheels you want balanced, or whether it is with new tyres
  • When the vibration starts, and whether you feel it in the steering or the seat
  • Where the car is, with firm, level ground beside it
  • Whether the car has locking wheel nuts, and where the key is
Tread and age

When a tyre needs replacing

Most tyres have small raised bars in the main grooves, called tread wear indicators. When the tread is worn level with them, the tyre is at the legal limit. A 20p coin is a rough check: if the outer band of the coin shows when it is pushed into the main grooves, the tread may be close to the limit.

Grip in the wet falls away well before the limit, so many drivers replace tyres at around 3 mm. Age matters too: cracking in the sidewall or between the tread blocks means the rubber is perishing, even on a tyre with plenty of tread left.

Pricing

How the price is worked out

There is no fixed figure that suits every car, so the price is built from a few things and told to you before you decide.

The price is the same at any hour. Asking for a price does not commit you to anything.

When you compare prices, compare like with like: the same brand and pattern, the same load index and speed rating, and whether balancing and a new valve are part of the job.

What goes into the price

  • The tyre itself: size, load index, speed rating and whether it is a run-flat
  • The tier you choose: budget, mid-range or premium
  • The work: a repair, one new tyre or several, and any locking nut removal
  • The location of the car

Questions

Questions and answers

Do new tyres need balancing?
Yes. A wheel is balanced each time a new tyre is fitted to it.
How do I know if my wheels need balancing?
A vibration at a certain speed, often felt through the steering wheel, is the classic sign. It tends to fade above that speed.
Is balancing the same as alignment?
No. Balancing evens out the weight around the wheel; alignment sets the angles of the wheels. They solve different problems.
Can you come to the motorway?
We never work on the carriageway of a motorway or main road, on a hard shoulder, in a smart motorway emergency area or on a slip road. If the car can be driven safely, leave at the next exit, stop away from traffic and then call.
Can I bring the car to you instead?
No. Rescue Tyres is fully mobile and works from one base at Brent Cross, NW2, which is not open to walk-in customers. The fitter comes to the car.
Can you work on the street outside my house?
Yes, if it is legal to park there and the car is not blocking traffic. A quiet residential street is usually fine; a busy main road or a red route is not.
Why does the car vibrate only at certain speeds?
An unbalanced wheel sets up a vibration that is strongest in one speed band, often on the motorway, and fades either side of it.

Why do tyres wear unevenly?

Bald edges, a worn centre or feathered tread each tell a story. Here's how to read uneven tyre wear patterns and fix the cause before it ruins the next set.
