There is a specific noise that acoustic tyres exist to kill. The air inside a tyre resonates as the tyre rolls, rather like blowing across a bottle, and that resonance transmits through the suspension into the cabin as a low drone. Foam inside the tyre damps it. It is a narrow, targeted fix rather than general soundproofing.
What the foam actually does
A strip of open-cell polyurethane foam is bonded to the inner liner, around the circumference under the tread. As the air in the cavity is excited by the tread hitting the road, the foam absorbs energy from that resonance and stops it building.
The effect is concentrated around the cavity resonance frequency, which typically shows up as a low-frequency boom on coarse surfaces at motorway speeds. It is the noise that makes a long journey tiring rather than the higher-pitched roar you hear from outside the car.
How much difference does it make?
Enough to notice on the right surface, and less than people expect on the wrong one. On coarse, chipped motorway surfaces where the cavity resonance is strongly excited, the reduction in booming is clear. On smooth asphalt where that resonance is not being driven hard, the difference is much smaller.
It also does nothing about the other sources of cabin noise: wind noise round the mirrors and pillars, engine or road roar transmitted through the body, and tread pattern noise radiated outward. What it means for repairs
This is the practical catch. The foam sits exactly where a puncture repair patch needs to go. Repairing an acoustic tyre generally means carefully removing or cutting back a section of foam to expose the liner, making the repair, and accepting that the acoustic performance in that area is reduced.
Some manufacturers permit this and specify how; others do not permit repair. It is worth knowing before you have a puncture rather than after, and it is a reason to ask the question when buying. The general repairability rules are in can a puncture be repaired.
What it does not change
The foam is acoustic treatment, not structure. It does not alter:
- Grip, braking or handling.
- Tread life or the legal minimum tread depth of 1.6mm, which is set out on GOV.UK.
- Load index or speed rating requirements.
- Whether the tyre is a run-flat or self-sealing, which are separate technologies.
Is it worth paying for?
If you do high motorway mileage in a car that is otherwise well insulated, and the noise that bothers you is a low drone rather than a general roar, it is a reasonable upgrade. On a car with significant wind noise or an older, less insulated body, spending the same money on a quieter tread pattern will often do more.
