Damaged tyre replacement in Kingston upon Thames

A cut, a bulge, a split or cord showing through the rubber means the tyre has to come off. We fit the replacement where the car is parked, so you do not have to drive on a damaged tyre to find a fitter.

Kingston upon Thames is about 11 miles in a straight line from our only base at Brent Cross, NW2. We give you an arrival time when you call.

Damaged tyre

Is a damaged tyre safe to drive on?

  • A bulge or bubble in the sidewall means the cords inside the tyre have broken. The tyre can fail without warning, so do not drive on it except slowly to a safe place to stop.
  • Cord or wire showing anywhere on the tyre makes it unsafe and illegal to use on the road.
  • A cut longer than 25 mm, or 10 percent of the tyre's section width if that is greater, that is deep enough to reach the ply or cord is illegal.
  • A split, or a deep crack across the sidewall, means a new tyre.
  • Fine surface cracking from age, or a kerb scuff with no bulge, cut or cord showing, may be cosmetic. The fitter will check it and tell you honestly.

What the job includes

  • A look at the damage, from a photo on WhatsApp if you can send one
  • A new tyre in the right size, load index and speed rating
  • The wheel checked for damage from the same impact
  • Wheel balanced and nuts tightened to the maker's setting
  • The old tyre taken away
Repair or replace

Why it is replaced, not repaired

BS AU 159, the British Standard for tyre repairs, allows a repair only in the central part of the tread and only for small holes. Damage to the sidewall or the shoulder, a bulge, a split or exposed cord is outside what the standard allows, so the answer is a new tyre.

Repair or replace

How the replacement is done at the car

Common sizes are often on the van; other sizes are sourced for the job.

  1. The fitter looks at the damage with you and confirms whether the tyre has to be replaced.
  2. The car is raised on firm ground and the wheel comes off.
  3. The old tyre comes off the rim, and the rim is checked for kerb damage. A bent or cracked wheel needs a wheel specialist: we fit tyres and do not repair wheels.
  4. The new tyre is fitted and inflated to your car's pressure, and the wheel goes back on.
Where we can work

Where the car can be while we work

The A3, including the Kingston bypass, is a red route. We cannot stop or work on it, so a car with a failed tyre has to be off it, on a side street or on private ground, before we can help. If it is not safe to move the car slowly to a side road, put the hazard lights on, get everyone out away from the traffic and call your breakdown cover.

If the car is in a controlled parking zone permit bay, tell us so the fitter can park legally beside it. A supermarket, office or other private car park needs the owner's agreement before we start. The fitter needs level ground and room on the side of the damaged tyre.

Before you call

What to have ready, and what decides the price

The price depends on the size and brand of the new tyre and how many you need, and it is the same at any hour. We work evenings, nights, weekends and bank holidays when the diary allows, at the same price as a weekday job. We confirm the price on the call.

  • The tyre size printed on the sidewall, for example 205/55 R16 91V, including the load and speed rating
  • The postcode or street where the car is, and which side the damaged tyre is on
  • Whether the car has locking wheel nuts, and where the key is
Tyre types

Run-flat tyres

Many newer cars, especially some BMW and MINI models, leave the factory on run-flat tyres and carry no spare wheel. The sidewall says so, with a marking such as RSC, ROF, SSR, ZP or RFT depending on the maker.

A car built for run-flats should stay on run-flats, because it has no spare to fall back on and its suspension is set up for their stiffer sidewalls. Tell us on the call if the car has them, so the right tyre is sourced.

Step by step

From your call to the finished job

→

Tell us what happened

Call or WhatsApp with where the car is, the registration and the tyre size from the sidewall. A photo of the damage helps find the right replacement.

→

Agree what happens next

You hear what the job involves and the options for your car. Nothing is booked until you say yes.

→

Work at the car

The fitter comes to your home, your workplace or a safe place to park, raises the car on a jack and does the job beside it.

Checked before the fitter leaves

Before the fitter leaves, the wheel is checked for security and the tyre pressure is set to the maker's figure.

Questions

Questions and answers

Should I replace the tyre on the other side too?
Not always. Tyres on the same axle must be the same size and type, and should have a similar tread depth. If the other tyre is in good condition, one new tyre is fine. If its tread is much lower, the fitter will tell you and you can decide.
Can the fitter work in a hospital, station or retail park car park?

Yes, if the site allows it. Supermarket, retail park and station car parks are private ground, so the owner's permission comes first. Places of this kind in this area include:

  • Kingston Hospital, Norbiton
  • Kingston University
  • Bentall Centre
  • Kingston station
  • Surbiton station
Can I claim for pothole damage?
You may be able to claim from the council or the authority that looks after the road. Note the location, photograph the pothole and the tyre, and keep the receipt.
Do I need to replace both tyres on the axle?
Not always. If the other tyre on that axle has good tread and is the same size and pattern, one new tyre can be enough.
Is a bulge in the sidewall dangerous?
Yes. A bulge means the internal cords have broken and the tyre can fail without warning. Do not drive on it further than you need to reach a safe place.
Will the wheel be damaged too?
It can be. The rim is inspected with the tyre off, and you are told if it is bent or cracked before the new tyre is fitted.
What if the tyre needs replacing rather than repairing?
You are told before anything else is done, with the reason and the options for a new tyre in your size. Nothing changes until you agree.
Can you come to the motorway?
We never work on the carriageway of a motorway or main road, on a hard shoulder, in a smart motorway emergency area or on a slip road. If the car can be driven safely, leave at the next exit, stop away from traffic and then call.
How much will it cost?
The price depends on the tyre size, the tier you choose and the work needed.
Can you fit tyres at my workplace?
Yes, if the site is happy for the work to be done there and there is room around the wheel. Tell us the address and where the car is parked on site.
