Locking wheel nut removal in Bartley Green

If you were looking for a garage near Woodgate or Jiggins Lane because the locking nut key has gone missing, the job can be done where the car is parked instead. The nut comes off with removal tools, with care for the alloy, and a standard nut goes back on.

Bartley Green is about 96 miles in a straight line from our only base at Brent Cross, NW2 (further by road). We have no base or van stationed nearby. Call and we will tell you straight away whether we can take the job; if we can, the arrival time is given on the call.

Locking wheel nuts

Not a garage you drive to

Rescue Tyres has no workshop in this part of Birmingham, or anywhere else: we are a mobile tyre service with one depot, in north London. A stuck locking nut does not need the car moved, because the removal is done at the wheel.

From B32 we are a long way off, so we take the job only when the diary allows. If we cannot come, you hear that on the call, which leaves you free to try someone nearer.

What the job includes

  • Removal with specialist tools, taking care of the alloy
  • A standard wheel nut of the right type fitted in its place
  • Every nut tightened to the maker's setting
  • Any tyre repair or new tyre done in the same visit
  • A check for proof that the car is yours or in your care
Where we can work

Where we can work: estates, campus and business park

Estate roads, cul-de-sacs and driveways around Woodgate, California, Adams Hill, Genners Lane and Scotland Lane are the easiest places to work, provided the car is on firm, level ground with space beside the wheel.

Newman University, the Leisure Centre and Woodgate Business Park have their own car parks, and the people who run them decide whether work can be done there. The same goes for the parking by the Jiggins Lane shops. Ask before you book.

We never work on the carriageway of a motorway or main road, on a hard shoulder, in a smart motorway emergency area or on a slip road. A car stopped on the Quinton Expressway or near M5 junctions 3 and 4 has to be moved off the road first.

If the wheel came off for a reason

Say on the call if a puncture or a worn tyre is the reason the wheel has to come off, and read us the size from the sidewall. Common sizes are often on the van; other sizes are sourced for the job.

The price depends on how many locking nuts need removing and whether you want standard nuts or a new locking set, plus any tyre work. It is confirmed on the call before anyone sets off, and it does not change in the evening or at the weekend.

Before you pick up the phone

  • The road and B32 postcode, or the nearest landmark such as Bartley Reservoir or Senneleys Park
  • Whether the nut is simply missing its key or is damaged or rounded
  • Proof that the car is yours or in your care (we may ask for it)
  • Permission from the site, if the car is in a private car park

How locking wheel nuts work

Most cars with locking wheel nuts have one on each wheel, with a patterned head that only its matching key will turn. The key is a small socket that fits between the nut and the wheel brace. Without it the wheel cannot come off, so a lost or broken key turns a simple puncture into a bigger job.

Each key has a code, usually on a small card that came with the car or stamped on the key itself. With the code, a replacement key can often be ordered from a dealer or the lock maker, which is worth doing if the wheel does not need to come off urgently.

A nut can also be damaged: the pattern rounds off when the wrong tool or an impact gun is used, or the key snaps inside the nut. In those cases the key would not help even if it turned up, and the nut has to be removed.

After removal

After the locking nut comes off

Every wheel nut is tightened to the maker's setting with a torque wrench. It is good practice to have the nuts checked again after the first short drive following any wheel work, as alloy wheels can settle slightly.

If you want locking nuts again, a new set can be fitted later. Keep the new key in the glovebox and note the key code somewhere outside the car, such as on your phone, so a replacement key can be ordered if it goes missing.

Step by step

From your call to the finished job

→

Tell us what happened

Tell us whether the key is lost, broken or rounded off. A clear photo of one of the nuts helps.

→

Agree what happens next

You hear what the job involves and the options for your car. Nothing is booked until you say yes.

→

Work at the car

The fitter comes to your home, your workplace or a safe place to park, raises the car on a jack and does the job beside it.

Checked before the fitter leaves

Before the fitter leaves, the wheel is checked for security and the tyre pressure is set to the maker's figure.

Before the visit

Before the nut comes off

If the key turns up but does not fit, or it slips on the nut, stop rather than force it: a rounded nut is harder to remove.

The previous owner, or the dealer that sold the car, may still have the key or its code, so a call to them can be worth it if the wheel can wait.

Questions

Questions and answers

Can the fitter work in a hospital, station or retail park car park?

Yes, if the site allows it. Supermarket, retail park and station car parks are private ground, so the owner's permission comes first. Places of this kind in this area include:

  • Newman University
  • Bartley Green Leisure Centre
The key has broken in the nut. Can you still help?
Yes. Stop turning it, because forcing a broken key rounds the nut further. The nut is taken off with an extraction socket instead.
Will locking nut removal damage my alloy wheels?
The method is chosen to avoid that. If an earlier attempt has already marked the wheel, the fitter points it out before starting.
What goes back on after removal?
Standard nuts matched to the wheel, or a new locking set if you prefer.
Can you remove locking wheel nuts without the key?
Yes. Removal without the key is the whole point of the job, and it is done at the car.
Can I bring the car to you instead?
No. Rescue Tyres is fully mobile and works from one base at Brent Cross, NW2, which is not open to walk-in customers. The fitter comes to the car.
How soon can the fitter get to me?
It depends on how far the car is from our only base at Brent Cross, NW2, and on the jobs already booked.
What should I have ready when I call?
The tyre size from the sidewall, the registration and the exact location of the car. If the car has locking wheel nuts, have the key ready.
How much will it cost?
The price depends on the tyre size, the tier you choose and the work needed.
Can you work on the street outside my house?
Yes, if it is legal to park there and the car is not blocking traffic. A quiet residential street is usually fine; a busy main road or a red route is not.
