Damaged tyre replacement in Bartley Green

Bartley Green is about 96 miles in a straight line from our only base at Brent Cross, NW2 (further by road), and we have no base or van stationed nearby. Call and we will tell you straight away whether we can take the job; if we can, the arrival time is given on the call. If the car is unsafe where it is, your breakdown cover may reach you sooner.

A tyre with a cut, a bulge, a split or cord showing through is replaced, not repaired, and the new one is fitted where the car is parked.

Damaged tyre

Bulge, cut or split: should the car move at all?

A bulge on the sidewall means the cords inside the tyre have broken, which can follow a hard hit on a kerb or a pothole. A tyre in that state can fail without warning, so do not drive on it, beyond moving the car out of danger at a walking pace. The same goes for any tyre with cord or wire showing.

BS AU 159, the British Standard for tyre repairs, allows a repair only in the central part of the tread and only for holes up to 6 mm. Damage to the sidewall or the shoulder is outside that area, which is why it cannot be repaired.

What the job includes

  • A look at the damage, from a photo on WhatsApp if you can send one
  • A new tyre in the right size, load index and speed rating
  • The wheel checked for damage from the same impact
  • Wheel balanced and nuts tightened to the maker's setting
  • The old tyre taken away

Telling us about the tyre and the car

Common sizes are often on the van; other sizes are sourced for the job. Two tyres on the same axle should be the same size and type, so tell us what is on the other side too.

  • The full size from the sidewall, for example 205/55 R16 91V, including any run-flat marking.
  • Where the car is parked, with the street name and postcode.
  • Whether the car has locking wheel nuts, and where the key is.
  • What the damage looks like: a bulge, a cut, a split or cord showing.
Pricing

Where in B32 the fitter can work, and the price

A drive or an estate road where the fitter can park legally beside the car works well. The A456 Hagley Road West and the Quinton Roundabout carry fast traffic and are no place to change a wheel, so the car needs to be on a side road first, if that can be done safely. A private car park, such as the one at Woodgate Business Park, needs the owner's permission.

The price depends on the tyre you choose, its size and how many you need. The price is the same at any hour, and you hear it on the call before anything is booked.

Staying safe

Staying safe until the job is done

While you wait for the fitter

  • Stop somewhere off the main flow of traffic, switch on the hazard lights and, if you have one, put on a high-visibility vest.
  • Get everyone out on the side away from the traffic and wait behind a barrier, on a pavement or well back from the road.
  • Keep your phone on and charged, and tell us about anything that makes the spot hard to find.

Tyre failure on a motorway

  • If the car can still be driven safely, carry on to the next exit or services and stop away from traffic before you call.
  • If you cannot leave, use an emergency area or the hard shoulder, stop well to the left and, if it is safe to, get out on the side away from the traffic.
  • Wait behind the barrier, not in the car. Rule 277 of the Highway Code says not to attempt any repairs on your vehicle on a motorway.
  • Call 999 if you are in danger or stuck in a live lane. Otherwise National Highways can be reached on 0300 123 5000.
  • We never work on the carriageway of a motorway or main road, on a hard shoulder, in a smart motorway emergency area or on a slip road.
Tyre types

Run-flat tyres

Many newer cars, especially some BMW and MINI models, leave the factory on run-flat tyres and carry no spare wheel. The sidewall says so, with a marking such as RSC, ROF, SSR, ZP or RFT depending on the maker.

A car built for run-flats should stay on run-flats, because it has no spare to fall back on and its suspension is set up for their stiffer sidewalls. Tell us on the call if the car has them, so the right tyre is sourced.

Step by step

From your call to the finished job

→

Tell us what happened

Call or WhatsApp with where the car is, the registration and the tyre size from the sidewall. A photo of the damage helps find the right replacement.

→

Agree what happens next

You hear what the job involves and the options for your car. Nothing is booked until you say yes.

→

Work at the car

The fitter comes to your home, your workplace or a safe place to park, raises the car on a jack and does the job beside it.

Checked before the fitter leaves

Before the fitter leaves, the wheel is checked for security and the tyre pressure is set to the maker's figure.

Questions

Questions and answers

Can the fitter work in a hospital, station or retail park car park?

Yes, if the site allows it. Supermarket, retail park and station car parks are private ground, so the owner's permission comes first. Places of this kind in this area include:

  • Newman University
  • Bartley Green Leisure Centre
Can I claim for pothole damage?
You may be able to claim from the council or the authority that looks after the road. Note the location, photograph the pothole and the tyre, and keep the receipt.
Will the wheel be damaged too?
It can be. The rim is inspected with the tyre off, and you are told if it is bent or cracked before the new tyre is fitted.
Do I need to replace both tyres on the axle?
Not always. If the other tyre on that axle has good tread and is the same size and pattern, one new tyre can be enough.
Is a bulge in the sidewall dangerous?
Yes. A bulge means the internal cords have broken and the tyre can fail without warning. Do not drive on it further than you need to reach a safe place.
Can I bring the car to you instead?
No. Rescue Tyres is fully mobile and works from one base at Brent Cross, NW2, which is not open to walk-in customers. The fitter comes to the car.
Can you fit tyres at my workplace?
Yes, if the site is happy for the work to be done there and there is room around the wheel. Tell us the address and where the car is parked on site.
What if the tyre needs replacing rather than repairing?
You are told before anything else is done, with the reason and the options for a new tyre in your size. Nothing changes until you agree.
How much will it cost?
The price depends on the tyre size, the tier you choose and the work needed.
Do you charge more in the evening or at the weekend?
We work evenings, nights, weekends and bank holidays when the diary allows, at the same price as a weekday job.
