Damaged tyre replacement in Berkhamsted

A cut, a bulge, a split or cord showing through the rubber is damage that no repair can make safe. The answer is a new tyre, fitted where the car is parked, with the wheel checked at the same time.

Berkhamsted is about 19 miles in a straight line from our only base at Brent Cross, NW2. We give you an arrival time when you call.

Where the car can be

In Berkhamsted (HP4), the work can be done on a drive, in a legal space on a residential street, or in a private car park such as the one at Berkhamsted station or the Waitrose car park on the High Street, if the car park's owner allows it.

We need firm, level ground with room to work beside the car: a driveway, a legal parking space on a quiet street, or a car park where the owner allows it. Supermarket, retail park and station car parks are private ground, so the owner's permission comes first.

We never work on the carriageway of a motorway or main road, on a hard shoulder, in a smart motorway emergency area or on a slip road. The car needs to be on a drive, a side street or private ground.

What the job includes

  • A look at the damage, from a photo on WhatsApp if you can send one
  • A new tyre in the right size, load index and speed rating
  • The wheel checked for damage from the same impact
  • Wheel balanced and nuts tightened to the maker's setting
  • The old tyre taken away
Staying safe

Is a damaged tyre safe to drive on?

  • A bulge or bubble in the sidewall means the cords inside the tyre have broken. The tyre can fail without warning, so do not drive on it except slowly to a safe place to stop.
  • Cord or wire showing anywhere on the tyre makes it unsafe and illegal to use on the road.
  • A cut longer than 25 mm, or 10 percent of the tyre's section width if that is greater, that is deep enough to reach the ply or cord is illegal.
  • A split, or a deep crack across the sidewall, means a new tyre.
  • Fine surface cracking from age, or a kerb scuff with no bulge, cut or cord showing, may be cosmetic. The fitter will check it and tell you honestly.
Repair or replace

Why it is replaced, not repaired

BS AU 159, the British Standard for tyre repairs, allows a repair only in the central part of the tread and only for small holes. Damage to the sidewall or the shoulder, a bulge, a split or exposed cord is outside what the standard allows, so the answer is a new tyre.

The kerb or pothole that cut the tyre may also have marked the wheel. Before the new tyre goes on, the fitter checks the rim for bends and cracks. A tyre cannot safely be fitted to a bent or cracked wheel; if we find one, we tell you so it can go to a wheel specialist. We do not repair wheels.

Before you call

What to have ready when you call

Common sizes are often on the van; other sizes are sourced for the job, and we tell you on the call which applies. The price depends on the size and brand of the new tyre, and we confirm it on the call. The price is the same at any hour.

  • The tyre size from the sidewall, for example 205/55 R16 91V. If the damaged tyre cannot be read, use the tyre on the other side of the same axle.
  • Where the car is: a postcode, a street name or a car park name.
  • Whether the car has locking wheel nuts, and where the key is.
Tyre types

Run-flat tyres

Many newer cars, especially some BMW and MINI models, leave the factory on run-flat tyres and carry no spare wheel. The sidewall says so, with a marking such as RSC, ROF, SSR, ZP or RFT depending on the maker.

A car built for run-flats should stay on run-flats, because it has no spare to fall back on and its suspension is set up for their stiffer sidewalls. Tell us on the call if the car has them, so the right tyre is sourced.

Step by step

From your call to the finished job

→

Tell us what happened

Call or WhatsApp with where the car is, the registration and the tyre size from the sidewall. A photo of the damage helps find the right replacement.

→

Agree what happens next

You hear what the job involves and the options for your car. Nothing is booked until you say yes.

→

Work at the car

The fitter comes to your home, your workplace or a safe place to park, raises the car on a jack and does the job beside it.

Checked before the fitter leaves

Before the fitter leaves, the wheel is checked for security and the tyre pressure is set to the maker's figure.

Pricing

How the price is worked out

There is no fixed figure that suits every car, so the price is built from a few things and told to you before you decide.

Asking for a price does not commit you to anything.

When you compare prices, compare like with like: the same brand and pattern, the same load index and speed rating, and whether balancing and a new valve are part of the job.

What goes into the price

  • The tyre itself: size, load index, speed rating and whether it is a run-flat
  • The tier you choose: budget, mid-range or premium
  • The work: a repair, one new tyre or several, and any locking nut removal
  • The location of the car

Questions

Questions and answers

Should I replace the tyre on the other side too?
Not always. Tyres on the same axle must be the same size and type, and should have a similar tread depth. If the other tyre is in good condition, one new tyre is fine. If its tread is much lower, the fitter will tell you and you can decide.
Do I need to replace both tyres on the axle?
Not always. If the other tyre on that axle has good tread and is the same size and pattern, one new tyre can be enough.
Will the wheel be damaged too?
It can be. The rim is inspected with the tyre off, and you are told if it is bent or cracked before the new tyre is fitted.
Is a bulge in the sidewall dangerous?
Yes. A bulge means the internal cords have broken and the tyre can fail without warning. Do not drive on it further than you need to reach a safe place.
Can I claim for pothole damage?
You may be able to claim from the council or the authority that looks after the road. Note the location, photograph the pothole and the tyre, and keep the receipt.
Can you work on the street outside my house?
Yes, if it is legal to park there and the car is not blocking traffic. A quiet residential street is usually fine; a busy main road or a red route is not.
Are you insured?
Yes. Rescue Tyres is fully insured, has fitted more than 2,000 tyres and is a UK registered company.
What if the tyre needs replacing rather than repairing?
You are told before anything else is done, with the reason and the options for a new tyre in your size. Nothing changes until you agree.
Can you fit tyres at my workplace?
Yes, if the site is happy for the work to be done there and there is room around the wheel. Tell us the address and where the car is parked on site.
