Locking wheel nut removal in Stratford-upon-Avon

Whether the car is in Shottery, Bishopton, Bridgetown or out at Tiddington and Alveston, a locking nut with a broken or missing key can be removed where it is parked.

Stratford-upon-Avon is about 76 miles in a straight line from our only base at Brent Cross, NW2 (further by road). We have no base or van stationed nearby. Call and we will tell you straight away whether we can take the job; if we can, the arrival time is given on the call.

How locking wheel nut removal works

If the locking wheel nut key is lost or the nut is damaged, the wheel cannot come off with normal tools. We remove the locking nut at the car with specialist removal tools, taking care to protect the alloy, then refit the wheel with a standard wheel nut so it can be removed in future.

If the tyre also needs a repair or a new tyre, tell us on the call so it can be done in the same visit. Before booking, check the glovebox, the boot and the spare wheel well for the key. A locking wheel nut is a security device, so we may ask for proof that the car is yours or in your care.

What the job includes

  • Removal with specialist tools, taking care of the alloy
  • A standard wheel nut of the right type fitted in its place
  • Every nut tightened to the maker's setting
  • Any tyre repair or new tyre done in the same visit
  • A check for proof that the car is yours or in your care
Where we can work

The A46, Maybird and the station car parks

We need firm, level ground with room to work beside the car: a driveway, a legal parking space on a quiet street, or a car park where the owner allows it. Supermarket, retail park and station car parks are private ground, so the owner's permission comes first.

The A46 skirts the town to the north and west, and the A3400 and A439 run into the centre. We never work on the carriageway of a motorway or main road, on a hard shoulder, in a smart motorway emergency area or on a slip road.

Maybird Shopping Park and the car parks at the town's two stations have their own operators, whose permission comes first.

We take jobs this far from our base only when the diary allows, and the answer on the call can be no. If we cannot come, we say so on the call rather than keep you waiting.

The price depends on how many locking nuts need removing, plus any tyre work. It is confirmed on the call before anyone sets off, and it does not change in the evening or at the weekend.

How locking wheel nuts work

Most cars with locking wheel nuts have one on each wheel, with a patterned head that only its matching key will turn. The key is a small socket that fits between the nut and the wheel brace. Without it the wheel cannot come off, so a lost or broken key turns a simple puncture into a bigger job.

Each key has a code, usually on a small card that came with the car or stamped on the key itself. With the code, a replacement key can often be ordered from a dealer or the lock maker, which is worth doing if the wheel does not need to come off urgently.

A nut can also be damaged: the pattern rounds off when the wrong tool or an impact gun is used, or the key snaps inside the nut. In those cases the key would not help even if it turned up, and the nut has to be removed.

After removal

After the locking nut comes off

Every wheel nut is tightened to the maker's setting with a torque wrench. It is good practice to have the nuts checked again after the first short drive following any wheel work, as alloy wheels can settle slightly.

If you want locking nuts again, a new set can be fitted later. Keep the new key in the glovebox and note the key code somewhere outside the car, such as on your phone, so a replacement key can be ordered if it goes missing.

Step by step

From your call to the finished job

→

Tell us what happened

Tell us whether the key is lost, broken or rounded off. A clear photo of one of the nuts helps.

→

Agree what happens next

You hear what the job involves and the options for your car. Nothing is booked until you say yes.

→

Work at the car

The fitter comes to your home, your workplace or a safe place to park, raises the car on a jack and does the job beside it.

Checked before the fitter leaves

Before the fitter leaves, the wheel is checked for security and the tyre pressure is set to the maker's figure.

Before the visit

Before the nut comes off

If the key turns up but does not fit, or it slips on the nut, stop rather than force it: a rounded nut is harder to remove.

The previous owner, or the dealer that sold the car, may still have the key or its code, so a call to them can be worth it if the wheel can wait.

Questions

Questions and answers

Can the fitter work in a hospital, station or retail park car park?

Yes, if the site allows it. Places of this kind in this area include:

  • Maybird Shopping Park
  • Stratford-upon-Avon station
Will locking nut removal damage my alloy wheels?
The method is chosen to avoid that. If an earlier attempt has already marked the wheel, the fitter points it out before starting.
What goes back on after removal?
Standard nuts matched to the wheel, or a new locking set if you prefer.
The key has broken in the nut. Can you still help?
Yes. Stop turning it, because forcing a broken key rounds the nut further. The nut is taken off with an extraction socket instead.
Can you remove locking wheel nuts without the key?
Yes. Removal without the key is the whole point of the job, and it is done at the car.
Are you insured?
Yes. Rescue Tyres is fully insured, has fitted more than 2,000 tyres and is a UK registered company.
Do you charge more in the evening or at the weekend?
We work evenings, nights, weekends and bank holidays when the diary allows, at the same price as a weekday job.
Can you work on the street outside my house?
Yes, if it is legal to park there and the car is not blocking traffic. A quiet residential street is usually fine; a busy main road or a red route is not.
How much will it cost?
The price depends on the tyre size, the tier you choose and the work needed.
