Locking wheel nut removal in Corby

You may still have the key and it may still not work: a cracked or worn key slips on the nut just as surely as a lost one leaves you stuck. In NN17 and NN18, the fix is the same, the locking nut is removed where the car is.

Corby is about 66 miles in a straight line from our only base at Brent Cross, NW2 (further by road). We have no base or van stationed nearby. Call and we will tell you straight away whether we can take the job; if we can, the arrival time is given on the call.

Locking wheel nuts

A key you have but cannot use

A broken or worn key is handled exactly like a missing one. Stop trying it once it slips, since each attempt rounds the nut a little more, and keep the key, its code card and the car's documents with you rather than in an unattended car.

If you do have the code and the key is lost rather than damaged, a replacement from the maker or a dealer may be the simpler route when nothing is urgent. We would rather you knew that.

What the job includes

  • Removal with specialist tools, taking care of the alloy
  • A standard wheel nut of the right type fitted in its place
  • Every nut tightened to the maker's setting
  • Any tyre repair or new tyre done in the same visit
  • A check for proof that the car is yours or in your care
Where we can work

Estates, villages and business parks

Driveways and residential roads in Kingswood, Danesholme, Lodge Park, Oakley Vale, Priors Hall Park, Beanfield and Snatchill, and in the villages of Weldon, Great Oakley and Gretton, all suit the job.

Willow Place, the station, the Cube and the pool have their own car parks, as do the Earlstrees industrial estate, Phoenix Parkway, Eurohub and Centrix Business Park. Ask whoever runs the site before booking.

We never work on the carriageway of a motorway or main road, on a hard shoulder, in a smart motorway emergency area or on a slip road, which rules out the A43, the A6003 and the A14 near junctions 7 and 8 until the car is off them.

Pricing

A trip of this length, and the cost

Sixty-six miles is a long way to send a van, so we come when the diary allows. If not, the call tells you at once.

The price depends on how many locking nuts need removing and whether you want standard nuts or a new locking set, plus any tyre work. It is confirmed on the call before anyone sets off, and it does not change in the evening or at the weekend.

After removal

After the locking nut comes off

Every wheel nut is tightened to the maker's setting with a torque wrench. It is good practice to have the nuts checked again after the first short drive following any wheel work, as alloy wheels can settle slightly.

If you want locking nuts again, a new set can be fitted later. Keep the new key in the glovebox and note the key code somewhere outside the car, such as on your phone, so a replacement key can be ordered if it goes missing.

Step by step

From your call to the finished job

→

Tell us what happened

Tell us whether the key is lost, broken or rounded off. A clear photo of one of the nuts helps.

→

Agree what happens next

You hear what the job involves and the options for your car. Nothing is booked until you say yes.

→

Work at the car

The fitter comes to your home, your workplace or a safe place to park, raises the car on a jack and does the job beside it.

Checked before the fitter leaves

Before the fitter leaves, the wheel is checked for security and the tyre pressure is set to the maker's figure.

Before the visit

Before the nut comes off

If the key turns up but does not fit, or it slips on the nut, stop rather than force it: a rounded nut is harder to remove.

The previous owner, or the dealer that sold the car, may still have the key or its code, so a call to them can be worth it if the wheel can wait.

Questions

Questions and answers

Will removing the nut damage my alloy wheel?
The aim is to remove it without marking the alloy, using tools made for the job. If a nut is badly damaged, the fitter explains the risk before starting.
Can the fitter work in a hospital, station or retail park car park?

Yes, if the site allows it. Supermarket, retail park and station car parks are private ground, so the owner's permission comes first. Places of this kind in this area include:

  • Corby station
  • Earlstrees industrial estate
Can you remove locking wheel nuts without the key?
Yes. Removal without the key is the whole point of the job, and it is done at the car.
The key has broken in the nut. Can you still help?
Yes. Stop turning it, because forcing a broken key rounds the nut further. The nut is taken off with an extraction socket instead.
Can I order a new key instead?
Yes, if you have the code from the card, the box or the handbook. The dealer or the nut maker can supply one, which suits you if the car can wait.
What goes back on after removal?
Standard nuts matched to the wheel, or a new locking set if you prefer.
Will locking nut removal damage my alloy wheels?
The method is chosen to avoid that. If an earlier attempt has already marked the wheel, the fitter points it out before starting.
How much will it cost?
The price depends on the tyre size, the tier you choose and the work needed.
Can you fit tyres at my workplace?
Yes, if the site is happy for the work to be done there and there is room around the wheel. Tell us the address and where the car is parked on site.
How soon can the fitter get to me?
It depends on how far the car is from our only base at Brent Cross, NW2, and on the jobs already booked.
