Locking wheel nut removal in Bilston

In WV14, as anywhere, the wheel stays on until its locking nut turns, and without a working key it will not. We remove that nut at the car, with care for the alloy, then fit standard nuts or a new locking set.

Bilston is about 104 miles in a straight line from our only base at Brent Cross, NW2 (further by road). We have no base or van stationed nearby. Call and we will tell you straight away whether we can take the job; if we can, the arrival time is given on the call.

Locking wheel nuts

When someone has already had a go

A nut that has been hammered, drilled or tried with the wrong socket is harder to remove cleanly, and so is a nut with very little room around it inside the wheel. Tell us what has been tried, and send a photo if you can.

If there is any risk to the wheel, the fitter explains it before starting, and you decide whether to go ahead.

What the job includes

  • Removal with specialist tools, taking care of the alloy
  • A standard wheel nut of the right type fitted in its place
  • Every nut tightened to the maker's setting
  • Any tyre repair or new tyre done in the same visit
  • A check for proof that the car is yours or in your care

Bradley, Coseley, Lunt and Stowlawn: where we can work

A drive, or a legal kerbside space on a street in Bradley, Ettingshall, the Lunt, Stowlawn, Loxdale, Coseley, Woodcross or Hurst Hill, gives the fitter room at the wheel.

Springvale Retail Park, Cannon Business Park and the Perry, Reliance and Barton trading and industrial estates are private sites, and so are the car parks around the market and the leisure centre. The owner has to agree first.

We never work on the carriageway of a motorway or main road, on a hard shoulder, in a smart motorway emergency area or on a slip road. A car stopped on the A463 Black Country Route, the A4123 Birmingham New Road or near M6 junction 10 has to be off the road before we can help.

Locking wheel nuts

Taking a Black Country job from NW2

This is one of the furthest areas we are asked about, and the diary decides. If the answer is no, we tell you on the call so you can look closer to home.

The price depends on how many locking nuts need removing and whether you want standard nuts or a new locking set, plus any tyre work. It is confirmed on the call before anyone sets off, and it does not change in the evening or at the weekend.

Bring these to the call

  • The street and WV14 postcode, or the nearest Metro stop such as Loxdale or Bilston Central
  • Whether the nut is simply missing its key or is damaged or rounded
  • The make and model of the car, and the tyre size if a tyre also needs work
  • Proof that the car is yours or in your care (we may ask for it)

How locking wheel nuts work

Most cars with locking wheel nuts have one on each wheel, with a patterned head that only its matching key will turn. The key is a small socket that fits between the nut and the wheel brace. Without it the wheel cannot come off, so a lost or broken key turns a simple puncture into a bigger job.

Each key has a code, usually on a small card that came with the car or stamped on the key itself. With the code, a replacement key can often be ordered from a dealer or the lock maker, which is worth doing if the wheel does not need to come off urgently.

A nut can also be damaged: the pattern rounds off when the wrong tool or an impact gun is used, or the key snaps inside the nut. In those cases the key would not help even if it turned up, and the nut has to be removed.

After removal

After the locking nut comes off

Every wheel nut is tightened to the maker's setting with a torque wrench. It is good practice to have the nuts checked again after the first short drive following any wheel work, as alloy wheels can settle slightly.

If you want locking nuts again, a new set can be fitted later. Keep the new key in the glovebox and note the key code somewhere outside the car, such as on your phone, so a replacement key can be ordered if it goes missing.

Step by step

From your call to the finished job

→

Tell us what happened

Tell us whether the key is lost, broken or rounded off. A clear photo of one of the nuts helps.

→

Agree what happens next

You hear what the job involves and the options for your car. Nothing is booked until you say yes.

→

Work at the car

The fitter comes to your home, your workplace or a safe place to park, raises the car on a jack and does the job beside it.

Checked before the fitter leaves

Before the fitter leaves, the wheel is checked for security and the tyre pressure is set to the maker's figure.

Before the visit

Before the nut comes off

If the key turns up but does not fit, or it slips on the nut, stop rather than force it: a rounded nut is harder to remove.

The previous owner, or the dealer that sold the car, may still have the key or its code, so a call to them can be worth it if the wheel can wait.

Questions

Questions and answers

Can the fitter work in a hospital, station or retail park car park?

Yes, if the site allows it. Supermarket, retail park and station car parks are private ground, so the owner's permission comes first. Places of this kind in this area include:

  • Bert Williams Leisure Centre
  • Coseley station
Will locking nut removal damage my alloy wheels?
The method is chosen to avoid that. If an earlier attempt has already marked the wheel, the fitter points it out before starting.
Can you remove locking wheel nuts without the key?
Yes. Removal without the key is the whole point of the job, and it is done at the car.
What goes back on after removal?
Standard nuts matched to the wheel, or a new locking set if you prefer.
The key has broken in the nut. Can you still help?
Yes. Stop turning it, because forcing a broken key rounds the nut further. The nut is taken off with an extraction socket instead.
Can you work on the street outside my house?
Yes, if it is legal to park there and the car is not blocking traffic. A quiet residential street is usually fine; a busy main road or a red route is not.
Can I bring the car to you instead?
No. Rescue Tyres is fully mobile and works from one base at Brent Cross, NW2, which is not open to walk-in customers. The fitter comes to the car.
What should I have ready when I call?
The tyre size from the sidewall, the registration and the exact location of the car. If the car has locking wheel nuts, have the key ready.
Do you charge more in the evening or at the weekend?
We work evenings, nights, weekends and bank holidays when the diary allows, at the same price as a weekday job.
