Locking wheel nut removal in Atherstone

Key gone from the glovebox, or snapped in the nut, on a car parked somewhere off the A5 in north Warwickshire? Until that locking nut is out, the wheel stays where it is, and so does any flat tyre on it.

Atherstone is about 89 miles in a straight line from our only base at Brent Cross, NW2 (further by road). We have no base or van stationed nearby. Call and we will tell you straight away whether we can take the job; if we can, the arrival time is given on the call.

Taking a job this far up the A5

A trip to CV9 is a long one for us, so it goes in the diary only when the diary allows. Some days the answer on the call will be no, and we would rather tell you that than leave you waiting on a maybe.

If the wheel does not have to come off soon and you still have the code card for the locking set, ordering a replacement key may suit you better than a removal from this distance. If the car has a flat and must be moved, your breakdown cover may be the better route.

What the job includes

  • Removal with specialist tools, taking care of the alloy
  • A standard wheel nut of the right type fitted in its place
  • Every nut tightened to the maker's setting
  • Any tyre repair or new tyre done in the same visit
  • A check for proof that the car is yours or in your care
Where we can work

Where the car can sit around Mancetter, Grendon and Dordon

A driveway or a legal space at the kerb in Mancetter, Grendon, Baddesley Ensor, Dordon, Hartshill, Ridge Lane or Witherley gives us what the job needs: firm, level ground and room for a jack beside the wheel.

Works yards on the Holly Lane and Carlyon Road industrial estates, and the B5K Business Park near Dordon, belong to the firms that run them. The car parks at the station and at the Leisure Complex are private too. On any of those, check with the site before you book.

We never work on the carriageway of a motorway or main road, on a hard shoulder, in a smart motorway emergency area or on a slip road. A car on Watling Street or near M42 junction 10 has to be off the road first.

Locking wheel nuts

A flat tyre and a missing key on one wheel

If you found the key missing because a tyre has gone down, tell us about both. Once the nut is out, a puncture can be repaired if the damage is in the repairable area, or the tyre replaced on the same visit.

Common sizes are often on the van; other sizes are sourced for the job. The size printed on the sidewall, such as 205/55 R16, lets us check before setting off.

Before you call

What to have ready when you ring

The price depends on how many locking nuts need removing and whether you want standard nuts or a new locking set, plus any tyre work. It is confirmed on the call before anyone sets off, and it does not change in the evening or at the weekend.

  • The street and the CV9 postcode, or the village if you are outside the town
  • Whether the nut is simply missing its key or is damaged or rounded
  • A photo of the locking nut, if you can take one
  • Proof that the car is yours or in your care (we may ask for it)
  • The make and model of the car, and the tyre size if a tyre also needs work

After removal

After the locking nut comes off

Every wheel nut is tightened to the maker's setting with a torque wrench. It is good practice to have the nuts checked again after the first short drive following any wheel work, as alloy wheels can settle slightly.

If you want locking nuts again, a new set can be fitted later. Keep the new key in the glovebox and note the key code somewhere outside the car, such as on your phone, so a replacement key can be ordered if it goes missing.

Step by step

From your call to the finished job

→

Tell us what happened

Tell us whether the key is lost, broken or rounded off. A clear photo of one of the nuts helps.

→

Agree what happens next

You hear what the job involves and the options for your car. Nothing is booked until you say yes.

→

Work at the car

The fitter comes to your home, your workplace or a safe place to park, raises the car on a jack and does the job beside it.

Checked before the fitter leaves

Before the fitter leaves, the wheel is checked for security and the tyre pressure is set to the maker's figure.

Before the visit

Before the nut comes off

If the key turns up but does not fit, or it slips on the nut, stop rather than force it: a rounded nut is harder to remove.

The previous owner, or the dealer that sold the car, may still have the key or its code, so a call to them can be worth it if the wheel can wait.

Questions

Questions and answers

Can the fitter work in a hospital, station or retail park car park?

Yes, if the site allows it. Supermarket, retail park and station car parks are private ground, so the owner's permission comes first. Places of this kind in this area include:

  • Atherstone station
  • Holly Lane industrial estate
  • Carlyon Road industrial estate
Will locking nut removal damage my alloy wheels?
The method is chosen to avoid that. If an earlier attempt has already marked the wheel, the fitter points it out before starting.
The key has broken in the nut. Can you still help?
Yes. Stop turning it, because forcing a broken key rounds the nut further. The nut is taken off with an extraction socket instead.
What goes back on after removal?
Standard nuts matched to the wheel, or a new locking set if you prefer.
Can I order a new key instead?
Yes, if you have the code from the card, the box or the handbook. The dealer or the nut maker can supply one, which suits you if the car can wait.
Can you remove locking wheel nuts without the key?
Yes. Removal without the key is the whole point of the job, and it is done at the car.
Are you insured?
Yes. Rescue Tyres is fully insured, has fitted more than 2,000 tyres and is a UK registered company.
Do you charge more in the evening or at the weekend?
We work evenings, nights, weekends and bank holidays when the diary allows, at the same price as a weekday job.
Can you work on the street outside my house?
Yes, if it is legal to park there and the car is not blocking traffic. A quiet residential street is usually fine; a busy main road or a red route is not.
Can I bring the car to you instead?
No. Rescue Tyres is fully mobile and works from one base at Brent Cross, NW2, which is not open to walk-in customers. The fitter comes to the car.
